Are Thick Socks Always Warmer? Busting A Common Sock Myth

When the temperature drops, most people instinctively reach for the thickest socks they own.

But is thicker always warmer? The answer might surprise you.

In this blog, we’re busting a common sock myth, based on insights from Andrew Lindner’s recent YouTube video, to help you make better choices when it comes to keeping your feet warm, dry and comfortable in winter.

Myth: Thicker socks are always warmer

This is probably the most widespread belief, but it’s not quite true. While thicker socks can provide more insulation in some situations, the key to warmth isn’t just thickness, it's the materials used.

For example, thick cotton or synthetic socks, often trap moisture, which cools your feet down. On the other hand, socks made from merino wool wick away moisture and regulate temperature, even if they’re thinner.

It all comes down to the fibres used, not just thickness.

Here’s what to look for:

Materials used: Merino wool is one of the best insulators because it retains warmth even when damp and naturally wicks away sweat. Keeping your feet dry is essential. Wet socks = cold feet. But before buying socks, be sure to check the actual merino content - as a rule, the higher the merino content, the warmer the socks - regardless of thickness.
