Choosing The Right Sock Size

Choosing the right sock size is important for comfort, fit and durability. However, sock sizing can be confusing because sizes vary between brands and countries.

The most accurate way to choose your sock size is to measure your foot length in centimetres and compare it with our sizing guide below. We also provide guidance on measuring leg and ankle circumference to help you select sock styles that fit comfortably around your foot, ankle and leg.

At Lindner Quality Socks, we offer a wide range of sock sizes from XS through to XL because we understand that feet come in many different shapes and sizes.

Please note: All our socks are unisex and designed to fit both men and women.

Quick Answer: How do I choose the right sock size?

The easiest way to choose the right sock size is to measure the length of your foot in centimetres and compare it with our sock size chart below. While your shoe size can provide a general guide, foot length is usually the most accurate measurement because shoe sizing varies between brands and countries.

A correctly fitting sock should sit comfortably on your foot, with the heel positioned correctly, enough room for your toes, and no excessive bunching or tightness.

What if I am on the cusp of two sock sizes?

If you are on the cusp of two sizes, we generally recommend choosing the smaller size if you have a narrow or average width foot. If you have a wider foot, choosing the larger size may provide a more comfortable fit.

Choosing the right size sock is important for comfort and durability, but sock sizing can be confusing. We’ve tried to make it a little easier with this video.

You can also follow the guide below.

Each sock style also includes its own measurement guide within the product listing. Simply look for the "[sock style] Measurements" link on the relevant product page.

How to Measure Your Foot for the Correct Sock Size

For the most accurate fit, we recommend measuring your foot rather than relying only on your shoe size.

You will need:

  • A piece of paper
  • A pen or pencil
  • A ruler or measuring tape

Follow these steps:

  1. Place your foot flat on a piece of paper while standing.
  2. Mark the end of your heel and the tip of your longest toe.
  3. Measure the distance between these two points in centimetres.
  4. Compare your measurement with the Foot Length Measurements table below.

We recommend measuring both feet, as many people have one foot slightly larger than the other. Use the measurement of your larger foot when choosing your sock size.

Measuring Leg Circumference for Sock Fit

Measuring your leg circumference can help determine whether longer sock styles will fit comfortably around your calf.

The following tips will help you determine if our socks will fit comfortably around your leg:

  1. Using the Sock Length & Circumference Table, work out the length of your preferred sock.
  2. Standing on a flat surface, place a 30cm ruler vertically on the floor beside your foot, up your leg, with the start of the ruler flush with the floor to determine where the sock will finish on your leg.
  3. Using a tape measure, measure around your leg (in cm) at the point where the sock will finish.
  4. Refer to the Sock Length & Circumference Table to determine if the sock will stretch to the circumference of your leg.

Measuring Your Ankle Circumference

For some people, ankle circumference can be an important consideration when choosing a sock style, particularly if you prefer a less restrictive fit or need additional room around the foot and ankle.

The following tips will help you determine if our socks can be pulled up comfortably around your foot and ankle:

  1. Using a tape measure, measure (in cm) diagonally around your foot starting from the top of your foot, around your ankle joint, around your heel and back to the top of your foot.
  2. Refer to our Sock Length & Circumference Table, to determine if the sock circumference will stretch over your foot and ankle. If the circumference of your heel to ankle is less than the circumference of the sock leg, they can generally be pulled up comfortably around your foot and ankle.

Signs You May Be Wearing the Wrong Sock Size

The right sock size should feel comfortable without restricting movement or creating excess fabric.

You may be wearing the wrong size if:

Problem Possible Cause
Socks bunch up inside your shoes or boots Socks may be too large
The heel sits underneath your foot Socks may be too small
Socks feel tight around your toes Socks may be too small
The fabric stretches thin across your foot Socks may be too small
Socks slip down during wear The fit may not be correct

A properly fitting sock helps reduce friction, improve comfort and allows the sock's construction to perform as intended.

Socks for Small Feet and Large Feet

Finding socks that fit properly can be challenging, particularly for people with smaller or larger feet.

A sock that is too large may bunch up inside footwear, while a sock that is too small may stretch excessively and become uncomfortable.

At Lindner Quality Socks, we offer a broader range of sizes than many sock manufacturers, including:

  • XS socks for smaller feet. These are knitted to fit a foot length of 18.5 - 21.5cm, or a children's size 13 - women's size 4.5 (AU/US). For our range of XS socks, please see Extra Small Socks; and
  • XL socks for larger feet. These are knitted to fit a foot length of 32.5 - 35cm, or a men's size 14.5 - 17 (AU/US). To shop our range of XL socks, please see Extra Large Socks.

A broader size range allows more customers to find a comfortable fit without compromising performance and durability.

Why Sock Fit Matters

The correct sock size can make a significant difference to comfort and durability. A well-fitting sock helps:
  • Reduce friction and the risk of blisters.
  • Keep the heel and toe areas positioned correctly.
  • Prevent bunching inside footwear.
  • Allow cushioning and insulation to work effectively.
  • Help your socks last longer.
